The Learning Curve celebrates with one inspirational learner

Here at The Learning Curve we are always pleased to see our learners succeed. We were especially excited to celebrate with Mariana as she was recognised as one of twelve learners who have transformed their lives at the Swindon Adult Community Learning Awards 2016.

The awards which took place on Monday 8th July 2016 at STEAM Museum celebrated the outstanding achievements of individuals and volunteers who took part in a variety of community-based courses in order to improve their lives, and the lives of their families. Mariana came to The Learning Curve as a learner on the Level 1 Jamie Oliver Home Cooking skills course before progressing onto the Level 2 course.

Karen Storey, The Learning Curve tutor said: “Mariana was enthusiastic and a real team player throughout the two courses. She has used the skills learnt and successfully gained employment at a local care home due to the time spent completing the two courses.” Mariana was an exceptional student and even arranged get together lunches after the course to keep learners in touch and encourage them to use the skills learnt on the course.

Mariana said: “I moved to the area when I was pregnant and when you are a new mum in a new area it can be hard. When I heard about the Jamie Oliver course and I grabbed it with both hands because I love cooking and wanted to build a bridge to get back into work and start meeting new and different people and cook different meals.”

Adult Community Learning is funded by the Skills Funding Agency and is primarily focused on disadvantaged communities with the aim of engaging a wide range of people such as vulnerable adults, those who are unemployed, those with learning disabilities or physical disabilities, ex-offenders, single parents, or those on low incomes.
Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Economy, Regeneration and Skills, said: “I must congratulate all our adult learners for their hard work and commitment, not to mention their courage in overcoming difficulties to move on with their lives.

“They have shown tremendous dedication to successfully complete their various courses and they are inspiration to us all. I wish them every success in the future.”
Well done Mariana.
